100 Names of Mary: Stories and Prayers
Published in Paperback by St Anthony Messenger Press (January, 2002)
Author: Anthony F. Chiffolo
Average review score:

From the Author
Perhaps the most popular saint of all, Mary, the Mother of Jesus, has come to be known by innumerable titles of devotion-some lists include more than six thousand titles-reflecting her many qualities. Some people call her the Blessed Mother. Others, the Blessed Virgin Mary-BVM for short-or the Virgin, Our Lady, or, simply, Mary. From Ark of the New Covenant to Virgin of Tenderness, from Our Lady of All Nations to Queen of Peace, this proliferation of titles reflects the different ways people relate to Mary.
Calling upon Scripture, the writings of the early Church, the pronouncements of the saints, papal statements, and recent biblical and theological scholarship, 100 Names of Mary provides historical and theological explanations of the origins of one hundred of Mary's most popular and intriguing names from around the world and across the Christian millennia. Each of the names also includes both traditional and newly written prayers of intercession to Mary that reflect the particular charisms of her titles. Together with an inspiring new Litany of Mary, the stories and prayers in this book provide a portrait of Mary
as mother, companion, disciple, apostle, and advocate who continues to guide the people of God on the path to holiness.

Annunciation
Published in Hardcover by Phaidon Press Inc. (November, 2000)
Authors: Julia Hasting and Phaidon Press
Average review score:

A treasure to all those who love great art .
This entire of collection of four books (Annunciation, Last Supper, Crucifixion, Descent) will be a treasure to all those who love great art and especially those attracted to religious art. Each book is beautifully bound in its own brilliant metallic color: gold, silver, bronze and copper. The unique size and color of the books make this set aesthetically pleasing. It is a wonderful collection to display on any shelf. The prints, more than 100 in each book, are of superb quality. Phaidon, the publisher, is recognized for excellence and elegance in all their printing. There is scant text; each book has a New Testament scriptural preface, then a brief caption accompanies each image.

As the titles project, a central event in Christ's life is elucidated by the world's best artistic masters; each brings their own commentary to the selected Christological theme. Most enjoyable, and educational, is the progression through time, starting with early art pieces and finishing with contemporary masters: Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol and Craigie Aitchison to mention just a few. From beginning to end, each book is a wonderful journey through time.

In "Annunciation," a book more about Mary than her son, each artist strives to capture this phenomenal encounter; a meeting unlike any other recorded in history. The Apostle Luke wrote; "the Angel Gabriel was sent from God... and he came to her and said..." Each photo plate vividly shows through form, color and light this astonishing angelic address. The progression of art shows how Mary's image has changed over the last two millenniums. This is a wonderful book, in a fantastic collection, at a very reasonable price. Highly recommended

Augustine Came to Kent (Living History Library (Warsaw, N.D.).)
Published in Paperback by Bethlehem Books (April, 1997)
Authors: Barbara Willard and Mary Beth Owens
Average review score:

A great introduction for children to this time period
This book centres around Wolf, a boy whose father was a Briton, brought to Rome as a slave in the 6th century, and set free by Pope Gregory. Pope Gregory had a concern for the propagation of the Gospel among the "heathen" Saxons in Britain, so he sent a group of monks, led by Augustine, to Britain. Wolf and his father go with them. They land there in 597, and the story follows Wolf as he returns to the land of his fathers, and as the Gospel is preached in Kent. My children, aged 7 - 13 enjoyed this story being read to them, and it really complemented our study of the time period.

The Basilica of Saint Mary : Voices from a Landmark
Published in Paperback by Basilica of Saint Mary (01 June, 2000)
Author: Peg Guilfoyle
Average review score:

Beautiful to look through and to read
This is truly a beautiful book whether you have seen the Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis or not. It works well as either a coffee table book to glance through or as a vibrant living history to read. The chapters are laid out by decade which showcases how the building, the people, and the city have changed through the century. It is also fascinating to see and read how religous faith has adapted over the years, yet simultaneously people's reliance upon their faith is just as strong. This is a beautiful book full of unbelievable photos, inspiring stories and unusual antedotes, all which show the life and vitality of this historic building.

Before Guadalupe: The Virgin Mary in Early Colonial Nahuatl Literature (IMS Monograph Series No. 13 )
Published in Paperback by Univ of Texas Press (September, 2001)
Author: Louise M. Burkhart
Average review score:

A Review of Nahuatl Literature
Burkhart's book is a collection of Nahuatl manuscripts with English translations that deal with the Virgin Mary prior to the development of the Guadalupe cult. Burkhart provides an interesting introduction and postscript to place matters in context. The book does not, however, really contain much information on the development of the Guadalupe cult. The reason for this is that there were virtually no Nahuatl materials dealing with Guadalupe until the mid seventeenth century. For the full story on Guadalupe, see Stafford Poole's book "Our Lady of Guadalupe."

Author: Richard J. Beyer
Average review score:

A unique Marian anthology.
This treasury of Marian devotions is unique in that it gives the historical and cultural roots for a rich selection of prayers, devotions, sacramentals, liturgies and apparition summaries relating to the Mother of God. It was written primarily to present these important contexts and to acquaint the reader with some of the contemporary apparitons of Mary, including Medjugorje, Betania, Akita, San Nicolas and Scottsdale. A fine and inspiring work!

The Carpenter's Son: Letters from Magdala
Published in Paperback by Covenant Communications (October, 1995)
Authors: Brenton G. Yorgason and Richard G. Myers
Average review score:

If you haven't read it, read it! If you have, read it again!
Yorgason has done it again, proving once again that he is one of the best Mormon authors out there! The main reason I like this book is that it is so thought-provoking. It made me think about things I've never thougt about before. It gives you a look at Jesus was really like, not just what he did, but how he handled life. This book is amazing! I reccomend this book to Mormons and non-Mormons alike!

The Catholic Answer Book of Mary
Published in Paperback by Our Sunday Visitor (March, 2000)
Author: Peter M. J. Stravinskas
Average review score:

A Marian Apologetics Compendium
This book is a compendium of sorts, drawing from the combined knowledge of over 25 well-known Catholic authors/apologists (Sugensis, Stravinskas and Armstrong for instance). The book is 29 chapters of Catholic doctrine, devotionals, evangelization guides and stories. It is extremely well-written, easy to read and since each chapter is authored by a different contributor the book does not get monotonous. The apologetics work is easy to understand and is spread out so the reader does not get bombarded all at once. If one wants to buy a book to help them in their apologetics work that revolves around explaining Marian doctrine, this is the book I would point them to first.
